2.2

1. Time: 1.00pm

Date: 15th December

Location: Hazelwick School in one of the class rooms, that has a table and that can be hooked up to a laptop. It will also be a light room to signfy the light asspects of drink.

Audience: my audience will be about four people age 16-18 years old.

I have chosen this space because the audience I am trying to get at is kids aged 16-18 because these are the ages that most people drink for fun and drink too much because most people can’t control how much they drink.

2. I will have a classroom from Hazelwick.

Evaluation

My film idea stayed the same but the ideas of how to show it changed while I was filming to what it was meant to be. I decided not to keep a few of my ideas because it wouldn’t of fitted with the rest of my film. I decided to make a voice over of Lewis and mark talking about what they are like and feel when they are drunk, instead of having it with the clip and cutting between both the interview and the film because it didnt really fit in. That was the same with the other part of the film with the P.O.V of someone walking and then lying on a bench, it didnt have any meaning to it but seemed like a good idea at the time but once I filmed everything it just didnt fit with the film.
I thought the editing went well and did as much as I could with the film but I feel that if the film was longer there were so many possibilities I could of done to make it better.
The viewing went alright and people seemed to enjoy it and some of them understood the concept of my film while others found it harder to pick out. I only showed it to a few people because if more people watched it they might not of concentrated which meant that they wouldn’t understand it and because of where I filmed it I could only show it once.
Over all I thought all of it went really well but looking back there are a few things I would do differently like try and make the meaning my film easier to understand for everyone. If I had to re-do it I would make the P.O.V a moving one so that both the person walking past and the camera walk past each other, this would mean I would of been able to make the image blurry and out of focus so the audience could tell it was about what and how the person saw people and objects while drunk. Also a way to end the film would of been like my first idea and have the P.O.V walking shot but with a can of beer or any other type of drink in the hand and then lying on a bench with it slowly fading to black to show that the person is just going to sleep anywhere.
I do think that for my first film it was good but I know it could of been better and next time I will make sure that I have all my ideas down and then sort out what i can use for my film and what would fit.

2.3 diary

Production
I started filming on the 25th November and I just needed one take on both clips I filmed in the location of the memorial gardens. It wasn’t a hard piece to film and it should of been quick which it was.
The time I filmed was on the 28th November because I had to change the actors I was going to use because they hadn’t finished their film so I chose two people that had finished their films and who just had a bit of editing to do. The piece that I filmed in the back of the radio studio was only done in one take which was good because I thought it might take a few takes in case they got stuck with what to say.
I decided not to film the other piece of my film with a P.O.V and lying down on a bench because I felt I didn’t really need it in the film the bits that I got I felt good with. I also didn’t really stick with my storyboard because I was going to have clips of the interview joint in with the film but it didn’t fit in.

Post-Production
For the editing I took the audio out of the clips from the interview and stuck it over the my whole film so the clips didn’t mess with my film. It also took me awhile to figure out how long each clip would be, because I wanted some parts slow nd others fast. I also chose transitions that would make sense in the film so it was fade out to try and seem like the person was blinking.

1.4 The use of exhibition space to create meaning

Once I had viewed the different experimental videos at the Tate Modern I released that the exhibition space can change the meaning of the work because some people find that if they are in a bright room they feel safe and secure because they can see everything that is going on in the room but this could mean that if the film is meant to show something dark then it won’t come across dark where as if it was in a pitch black room with no windows or lights apart from the film itself then it we seem scarier because the audience can’t see what is happening around them which would scare them a bit. For example at the Tate modern there was one piece of work that Susan Hiller made she had it in a black room with five projectors all aimed at one big screen but in five different places with five different colours. The colours used were blue, purple, green, red and yellow. The film has five different clips of parts of films that involved kids with powers. After it showed the part it wanted to, it would disconnect and then it would re- appear but the clip that was on the first screen would be on the third in a different colour than before and it kept changing like that to try and get across that if the film is in a different colour it makes the audience feel different about the film. Compared to Dominique Gonzalez who’s film was in a brightly lit room with other exhibitions around it but all the exhibitions around it seemed to fit in with Dominique’s film. His film was about how is has rained for ages and it was done with clips of films taking from movies the 1970’2. If these exhibition had swapped places and Dominique’s film had been in the dark it would have had a different meaning which is the same with Susan Hiller’s film had been done in a bright room.

1.6. Audience, and audience interpretation of the work

In our class everyone had their own ideas about all the films and not everyone had the same idea because everybody is different and they don’t like the same thing.

For 1001 nights most people thought it was plan and boring because it was just 5 women on the scene and no action, I also found it hard to tell what was going on because they were telling stories but in all the stories the women died but here were women telling stories about what happened so I didn’t know if it was them telling stories of someone else’s trouble with war. Someone else in class thought it might be a dream. I thought the main aim of the film was to try and tell people that war effects everyone even innocent people who aren’t in the war.

In Telling lies I think everyone in the class thought it was funny because the voices were saying one thing but the writing was saying another thing. It was like the writing was telling the audience what the people were really thinking. I thought it was hard to read because sometimes it would go so quickly. I also thought it want that people will always tell a lie to protect people.

The last film is Gisele Kerozene everyone thought that this film was really funny because of the stop motion it made it funnier. Everyone kind of agreed with this film because it had a easy storyline to follow. The way the character where done made it funny as well because the witches were funny looking. It was about three witches trying to get back something that was stolen from them.

The reason that the class all had different feelings towards the films are because every person likes different types of films, also because people bring their live into films that they view. It isn't a bad thing that everyone has different reviews because then it makes other people think about what else it could mean. No matter how someone watches a film they will relate to the film even if they like it or don't like it because there is always a reason you don't like it for some sort of reason. It doesn't matter if the artist has a different message to what the audience receives because even if it isn't the same idea it brings out loads of different ideas because everyone has a different imagination.

1.5. How these works might inspire your own work

Some of the ideas that the films have given me is to use slow motion to try and get the point across to the viewers. I am also thinking about have writing across the footage because sometimes people understand more by reading and other people understand by visual. I also want it in black and white.

1.3Narrative and non-narrative structures Discuss the story line is it simple structure Begin, middle, end or is there a more complex or different str

All three films although really different all have some sort of narrative and some times the narrative is easier to telling and others aren’t.

In 1001 nights it seems like it doesn’t have a story line but if you think about it because all five women tell a story their story has a beginning middle and an end, and it starts at one end and ends at the other.

In Gisele Kerozene it has a basic structure in it with a beginning middle and an end. It starts off with three witches bowing down to a stature and then it gets taking and the middle is them chasing the witch that stole it and the end is the witch that stole it is about to kill the other witch but decides to give it back.

In Telling lies the narrative is basic with a beginning, middle and an end. It is an animated film with just words on the screen but at the beginning it starts with a guy getting a phone call. The middle is him on the phone to other people and the end is him slamming down the phone.

I think that if a story doesn’t have a narrative then the audience might find it hard to understand because they wouldn’t know what was happening with the film because everything would be everywhere and wouldn’t make sense.

The audience might not understand a non-traditional narrative because with a traditional narrative they have a beginning, middle and an end. Where a non-traditional narrative doesn't have a beginning, middle or an end because they try to confuse the audience because the story is every where and some people might not want to pay attention because there isn't a traditional narrative.

1.2 The use of technology and techniques and styles

The technology and techniques that are used are somewhat the same even thought they are filmed with decades apart. For example all of the films are heavy post produced, but in Gisele Kerozene uses stop frame animation, so the film is a craft based film, because the director is trying to bring new ways of filming. The sound that is used is non-diegetic because it is added on after, but it is only the sound of the witches. Telling lies soundtrack could be argued that it is diegetic and non-diegetic because although we can’t see the people talking they could have recorded the conversation as it was happening. It is more of a concept base film because there isn’t any new ways to film. This is similar to 1001 nights because it is a concept style because the camera stays in one place and doesn't have any new ways to show skills. The sound is diegetic because we can see the people on the scene and they are talking about the stories. Girl chewing gym is concept based film because the camera stays in the same place for a while and only moves up and down or left to right. The only sound that can be heard is a alarm of some sort. The audience think it is a narrator over the film but but he isn't narration it he is just telling the audience what he thinks is going on.

(1) Discuss at least three of the artists you have looked at comparing general similarities and differences between them.

The three films that I chose to talk about where Gisele Kerozene by Jan Kounen, telling lies by Simon Ellis and 1001 night by Jananne Al-Ani. The differences between the three films are the pace is very different in all three, in Gisele Kerozene the pace is quite fast this is similar to Telling lies because the pace is fast in this film, but in 1001 nights the pace is very slow because there is no action in it. The types of images that are used are different in all three because in Gisele Kerozene it is all action, where as in telling lies the only imagers that are used are words on a black background so there is no action in it at all, this is sort of similar to 1001 nights because it’s a black background and only has five women on the scene.
The fact that all the films where made in different decades could effect the type of audience that the film effects because 1001 nights was filmed in 2006 the audience that might not understand it are people that haven’t been around in 2000/ end of the 1990’s because they wont know about all the different wars that went on around the world, the other people that might not understand it are people from other countries because they don’t know what goes on in the little countries around the world. The people that might find it difficult to understand telling lies are people from the 1970’s because the speed is quite fast. The people the might find it hard to understand Gisele Kerozene are people from the earlier 1960’s because it is a fast pace and they use a lot of different types of animation.

Craft- Craft is a type of skill that is needed when making something.

Concept- this is the reason behind the film and why it is there.

Context- this is when you have all the facts and then the facts are used to help create a sense of realism.

Gisele Kerozene

Gisele Kerozene was filmed in 1989

This film was 3 minutes long, it was filmed by Jan kounen . The Film was in colour but the main colours it just were black, green, orange and red. They also had buildings to show that it was in a town centre, the film I think is about witches because they had brooms, long fingers and warts. the film also used stop motion.

The sound is non-diegetic.

This film was trying to show people the skills that can be used to make a film.

I thought that this was a funny film because the type of skills they used were different which made it funnier.

Telling lies

Telling lies is a 4 minute clip. It is a black background with different colour writing to show the different people who are talking. The pace of the text is in line with the audio.
The sound was non-diegetic and I think it would be a phone call because we hear the dialing of the numbers and the ringing.
I think the concept of the clip is to make it clear to people that no matter who you are you always tell lies even if its to protect someone or because you just don't want them to know.
I think the film was really funny because they say one thing but the subtitles tell you what they really mean.

KOYAANISQATSI

KOYAANISQATSI was directed by Godfrey Reggio in 1982. It is 87 minutes long.

The imagery that can be seen in this film reminds me of the future, with all the metal and grey colours. There is also images of a desert, cave drawings and buildings that have been blown up.

It is non- Diegetic sound with strings, a piano, a bass and a choir. The sound speeds increases as the film goes on but then like the beginning towards the end it slows down again, maybe to show that it is in sow motion.

I think the premise of the video is to show the effects of war and how rushed peoples lives can be and maybe they are trying to show that if you try to rush live you miss out on important things.

I thought this film was a bit confusing because one minuter it was in slow motion then it became really fast and hard to tell what was going on in the picture.

1001 nights

1001 nights is dicetored Jananne Al-Ani in 1998 it was a 6 minute colour video.

This clip was done with a black background they were all women and it was like a mirror because the first and last women were wearing a blue and white type of top, the second and the Fourth women were wearing a black top and then the third women was wearing a gold top.

The sound was diegetic and it was a monologue.

I think the premise of the video is the different types of people that can be effected by a war that isn't theirs.

My thoughts on the film where that it was weird because I didn't know if they were trying to tell peoples stories or it was their stories of some sort of war.

I would say that this clip is craft video because the camera stays in the same place for the whole time, so the idea behind the clip is most important.

Second image

The image of the walls in the tunnel all messed up and needing to be re-painted aren't what you would see in postcards because it show the unattractiveness of the seaside, this would make people not want to go visit the seaside.

brighton pics

I think that even thought the photo of the rusty metal of the old burnt down Pier was a good picture of what you don't see in postcards because people wouldn't be attracted to Brighton because of the old pier so it wouldn't be shown on any postcards or leaflets. even though i think that the photo of the old pier would be something i wouldnt mind seeing in a postcard because its got history in brighton because no one knows what happened to the peir. so some people would think this photo would be a downside to the seaside.

what is Experimental video

I think the word "experimental video" means that you are watching something that is given you an experience of things that can and could happen to you or around the world. I think the types of film that are experimental videos are documentaries because they help people to understand things bout life and what goes on in the world.

I also think that it could mean that if you are new at filming it is all the different types of filming you go through until you get the film the way you want it to be, with everything done well
